"Well you can work without shoes; that's definitely one of the attractions. I used to do without the shoes even when I worked in an office. "

Did you ever read Flylady? Who said that the first thing you do every day is put your shoes on? I always thought, "Shoes? I don't even get out of my PJs!"

These excuses certainly aren't exclusive to WAH MTs.

It's NOT? Then why is this thread titled "Transcribe With Children?"? (The "working at home" part is assumed as it's not too likely a newbie MT -- or a newbie-anything-else -- would think she could get an on-site job with no experience, with her newborn in a Snugli and a Terrible 2 in tow.)

I flunked out of Flylady. Spectacularly.

I find it fascinating that a certain degree of 'we're all different' and 'everyone's experiences' with this subject is accepted, but no such latitude is to be found in the "Cherry-Picking" thread.

If situational exclusions or inclusions are good in one arena, then, IN GENERAL, they should be good in all situations, no?

Add me to the list of the childless who have first-hand experience with this. I recall one employee who was one of my best MTs for several years. She got pregnant, and after her baby was born the quality of her work went down the toilet. We worked on it for months and months, she would try to improve, would improve for a day or two, and then things would go south again. We finally had to part company, and she admitted to me that "this is a lot harder than I thought it would be."

It's more fun if everyone plays, 'mommy' experience or not. I can visualize someone running in saying 'FIGHT! FIGHT!' and everybody rushes in to see who's into it with whom. Guess we all know who is bored with her own work today and very glad it's Friday so she can plant things in her new greenhouse. <proud smirk>

Oh, and do dogs count? I think they should. Transcribing at home with dogs. Hmmm.

To be picky, the title of the thread was actually "Transcribe with children?" It didn't say "how to." Since it's Linda's topic, I guess she'd be the only who could say definitely whether she meant it to be strictly a "how to" topic. Since it's your board, though, I guess you get to make the rules in any case.

I don't have first-hand experience transcribing with children underfoot, true (not my own at least--only other people's tearing around the office or screaming in the waiting room, since I put in 30 years in pediatrics), and to you that obviously equals I have no knowledge concerning the subject at all. OTOH, there's an old saw about wise men, fools, and experience....

However, I'm now really out of here whether anyone replies to an earlier post or not.

No, no, Margie, that's only second-hand experience, so you know nothing about it.
You can only post to this with big disclaimers and a special dispensation as well. smile

I'd give anything to do what I'm currently doing with an infant sitting near me or on me. Try getting back to me after homeschooling a 10-year-old who has a severe case of 'donwanna!'.

Okay, so Julie had a small grouch attack. There's a lot of that going on today. However, she didn't say it was a rule that you had to have kids to have an opinion on the subject, so I say we ignore her <very big grin> until she does say so. Don't try to analyze that sentence. I'm not even sure what I just said other than nobody leave this topic! I'm not through hearing what you have to say, kid credentials or not!

{of course if Julie gets after me, I'm out of here!}
