On average, how time consuming is the course at Andrews? Don't get me wrong; I don't mind spending time studying. I am just curious on what to expect when I sign up for the course. Is this a self-paced course? How long will it take to graduate from this course? I already have a certificate obtained from a local college, but I want to better my education in this field.
Thanks,
Snowdog

The course at Andrews is self-paced, but we must set goals each week in order to make sure that we are staying on-track. You can graduate in 9-12 months, or some graduates have taken 2 years. It all depends on how much time that you spend on your course work. It is a very thorough education, and if you have a certificate from a local college you might be able to finish more quickly.
I'm sure Linda will be along soon to give you any information I may have left out.

Thank you Moaab. The study part is probably easy, but the transcription part is going to get me. Compared to my college course the transcription part (from what I have read on their web site) at Andrews will be more thorough. In college, I had to transcribe about 40 reports. No wonder nobody wants to hire me

The transcription part is tough. Andrews uses real doctors doing dictation for our transcription practice and assessments. And they are very thorough with their grading. But, that thoroughness is a good reason why you will find a job when you graduate. The instructors show you exactly where you were wrong, why it is wrong, and how to do it correctly, whether it be grammar, punctuation or sentence structure. I'm only in the first module, but I've already transcribed more than 40 dictations.
Snowdog, if you are interested, give Linda Andrews a call. She's always willing to help and she could probably give you some of the answers you're looking for.
I hope that helps, and good luck to you!

Snowdog, I didn't need to add anything. It looks like you got some good information before I got here! I don't think there was anything else that I needed to add.
I'll be in meetings most of today, so if I don't answer, send an e-mail with your number and I can return your call. There is no way to leave a message on my answering machine because often I couldn't understand the phone numbers and when I did call people back, it was too often sales calls.
I HATE sales calls. That's why I don't hire people to call potential students and pressure them to enroll. When I talk with people, I often talk them out of enrolling. Medical transcription is not an appropriate career for most people. It can be very nice for those who have the prerequisite skills and training though! I'm always happy to call people back. Send me an e-mail any time. You won't be pressured in any way.

Snowdog,
Don't regret that you completed a college program already! Regret doesn't get you anywhere. Instead, realize that no learning is ever wasted. You undoubtedly learned a lot of good background material and gained perspective on the MT field. All of that is a benefit.

I was asked what I like best about our course. One of the major advantages of our course, in my opinion, is the fact that your work is evaluated by several high-level medical transcription educators, with different styles and personalities, just like it will be on the job. At least one of them will be very much like one of those who will be evaluating your employment tests and your work on the job later. On the job, you won't work with just one person. You have to be able to adjust to different work styles and personalities without getting stressed out. Supervisors are constantly moved in, out, and around. Flexibility is one of the skills we build in our students from the very beginning.
During your first days/weeks on your very first MT job, you may gain confidence when you realize, ‘My supervisor has a style similar to Instructor C at Andrews. That gives you confidence and the ability to work well with all sorts of supervisor personalities and styles.
You might get through the course successfully with only one person viewing your work, but then you would start questioning whether employers will see your work the way that particular instructor did. “I know my instructor says I’m ready to go out and get a job, but she’s the only person who has ever seen my work. What if she’s wrong?!” When several expert instructors have ‘signed off’ on your work, your confidence level is much stronger.

Hi Snowdog,
I can give you an idea of the study time I committed to the course, with the caveat that each student's study habits and needs will be slightly different.
I enrolled at Andrews a little over a year ago, and I expect to graduate within the week. I studied each and every day, with little exception. Some weeks I was only able to devote 15-20 hours to the course, but most weeks I gave 25-35 hours to the course. That's a lot of time, but that's the amount of time I needed to not only keep up with course deadlines, but to do well.
The curriculum is certainly dense, but it is highly effective. By the time you graduate, you will have transcribed many hundreds of reports in every specialty. Succeeding at Andrews takes time and dedication, but I believe it is well worth the effort!
Best of luck to you!

Oops! I just realized I responded to an older thread. It's so frustrating to not be able to see post dates while logged in.
I hope this information may still be useful to someone in the process of researching schools!

No problem, AmyBeth. I posted to this thread earlier today, just because it was handy, so I actually was the one who 'bumped' the old thread.
