For several months my mouse will lock up. Everything still works on my keyboard but the mouse won't budge. My husband (who did all my computer work) tried everything from changing to a new mouse, going from USB to serial port(?). That didn't work. He uninstalled and reinstalled the software. He ran diagnostics. The log showed nothing. (Sorry, but this on logs means nothing to me.) Anyhow, after he died, I have had a computer tech out to finish setting up my computers (we were in the process of moving) and he has looked at my mouse and had to contend with it while working on my computer. He has tried the same things--and this guy is GOOD as well. Nothing.

I can unplug my mouse and plug it back in and most times it will work but occasionally I will have to unplug it two or three or more times and then it will start working. Sometimes I can type just a couple of letters and it will lock up again or some days I will go for hours before it starts. Today it has been type, unplug, type, unplug, and I'm going crazy not to mention the time wasted.

My OS is Windows 2000 Pro and I'm running Word 2000. My mouse that I'm using now is a Logitech track ball. But no mouse has worked. My husband took my mouse to his system and it worked. GRRRRR!!!!

Has anyone had anything similar? Does anyone have any suggestions? Please remember that I am just now having to learn about a lot of things related to hardware and the peripherals.

Thanks for any thoughts and suggestions.

I have the same mouse as you. Mine will do that periodically. I pop out the ball and use a soft dry cloth and polish the ball well and use it inside the mouse too. Dirt and fuzz collects inside the mouse itself and needs to be cleaned periodically. This works for me everytime. Hope this helps with your problem.

I have gone back to using the old standard mouse without the ball or the wireless ones. Your problem seems really severe though. It could be your computer and the fact that you have an old windows system. They had lots of problems with that windows you are running. Good luck.

I clean my mouse every morning before starting and I've had 2000 PRO since it came out and have used the same mouse for years. This problem has just started in the last few months. Would it just occur with no change in either. We have not been able to tie it to anything done differently. It seems like my husband at one point finally reloaded the OS but I'm not certain about that. In case he didn't would that be worth the effort?

Appreciate everyone's thoughts and time.

I'm no techie, but I keep wondering, if only because it hasn't been mentioned, if your 2000 Pro has been kept updated with all the service packs and driver updates. It is tempting, when you say your current computer tech (who is "GOOD") out and he cannot track it down, to think that he would have checked this kind of thing, but as seen in another thread, not all techguys are created equal, even when our impression is that they are great.

My temptation with the updates sometimes is to ignore them for fear something will crash, but yes--all the updates and service packs are installed. My husband insisted on that. And, it was not after any update that this started. Again, GRRRRR!!!!

My comp tech worked for Microsoft and retired early to move here and be close to grandkids. I really feel he pretty much knows what he's doing and he is totally stumped. But--I also feel you people out there have had the hands-on, practical experiences that someone like him could be missing.

Please, keep thoughts and suggestions coming. There's got to be something that has been overlooked. Hopefully.

My edit: Today it has not acted up at all.

These are some late, wild guesses here, but what about updating the drivers for that model mouse?
You can do this through Control Panel> Mouse> Hardware> Properties> Driver> Update Driver.

Also, I see you mentioned that you switched between serial and USB ports, and that too didn't solve the problem, so that rules out a problem with USB port.

And finally, I know you stated you installed and reinstalled the software and ran diagnostics, but in Control Panel, did you customize the Mouse Properties?
Control Panel> Mouse
Play around with the Pointer Options - Motion and see if adjusting it faster or slower might help.

Well, the last two days I've tweaked the mouse several times. At first I had no problems for several hours and thought--HEY! all the while knowing that it is inconsistent and at times will work pretty consistently. Last evening it started. Nothing since has made any difference and to this point in typing this reply I've had to unplug my mouse 4 times.

I'm about ready to pull my hair out or throw the mouse--whichever hurts me the less and makes me feel better.

I'm wondering if I completely reload my OS if that might fix any issues. Thoughts? Yesterday it was GREAT! Today I'm ready to pitch the whole thing.

To all those who took time to reply and those who just viewed, I did NOT reload by OS, I QUIT tweaking my settings, I decided just to live with it as long as I could and then it started working! It has not given me any problems for 5 days now. I've held off saying anything for fear of jinxing it but did want to let everyone know that there has been no solution as such--it just stopped like it started.

I would still be interested if anyone has experienced something similar and I just hope my next post isn't to say it has started back.
