Hello Mike:
I recently got a new job that requires Vista Ultimate. I use Smartype as a production tool, and the latest version by Stedman's is 2004 and does not support Vista.
I love Smartype, and I used to be in touch with Barbara Grow. Do you have any ideas? I have been out of the industry for a bit and am having to update all my production tools.
I would really like to get in touch with Barbara Grow; maybe she is retired.
You have been a great help to me in past years, and I appreciate any ideas.
Thank you.

This is something Hewlett-Packard provided for their customers. I don't have Vista, so I don't have personal experience with how well it works (or doesn't), but I don't imagine it would hurt to try it.

Thanks, I will try that and let you know. I cannot believe that SmarType has not been upgraded since 2004. I love the resources that come with Vista, but a lot of software needs to catch up.
Thanks so much.

Vista doesn't play well with others. My daughter bought a laptop with Vista, and for one thing, it's a memory hog, requiring a HUGE amount of RAM to run. It's not compatible with a lot of software, probably not just Smartype. I bought my computer right before the end of the year, when Dell was still selling new PCs loaded with Windows XP. I am waiting for the next version of Windows to come out. Maybe they will have gotten all the bugs out of Vista by then.

I cannot even describe the nightmare I endured upgrading from Vista home to Ultimate. HP sent me 2 sets of recovery disks, because the upgrade wiped out my ethernet, wifi, etc. I talked to 4 different tech support guys, who gave up and sent me the disks, because I could not system restore by the F11 method. I spent hours and hours on the phone, and the disks took hours to load, only at the last minute to get a message that recovery had failed. The last tech said I must have gotten faulty disks, so they overnighted me more disks.
After I hung up, I rebooted and prayed and started pressing the F11 key......lo and behold, I was able to restore Windows home premium all by myself.....I was estatic.
The irony of the RAM thing is that I wanted lotsa RAM because I like using production software and drug software. They always made MSWord unstable and froze my computer.
Boy, do I have RAM now, 4GB, but there is very little software that is yet compatible.
Thanks for your reply....I guess I will just have to use MSWord macros and refresh my memory on building shortcuts.
I was able to load Stedman's 2008 spellchecker, thank goodness.

Thanks for the link. It did not work for SmarType; however, it is a valuable tool, and I will keep it for future reference.

I'm sorry it didn't work for you. I should have known that it sounded to good to be true. I understand how upsetting it is not to be able to use your favorite program. I still miss using PRD as my expander. Truth be told, I miss WordStar, too.
