I was offered 7.5 cpl for a position at Softscript. I emailed the recruiter that I could not accept this line rate.

She emailed me back with the following response:
Wow with only 3 years experience you are making .09 cpl? That is great. If you want to produce your last two pay stubs and if you can achieve our line requirement and accuracy we can match your .09 cpl. You would still have to start out at the rate I quoted you and achieve these requirements within 90 days.

I emailed the recruiter my last 3 paystubs, calling her bluff and proving I did make 0.9 cpl, and now she emails me today and says she cannot offer me 0.9 cpl and she now is in possession of my check stubs. I feel this is unethical and would like help in reporting this recruiter.

Thanks

I don't understand what part of this you think is unethical.

You sent the requested information voluntarily. You even provided more pay stubs than requested. Your pay stubs do not provide any information beyond that that any applicant would have to produce (i.e. SSN), other than a confirmation that you were making the line rate you had claimed.

The recruiter made a promise she did not/could not keep. This happens a million times a day.

So why ask for my pay stub if she knew she could not offer what she promised?

Perhaps she thought she could match your current rate. Perhaps she is an idiot. Perhaps she was testing you to see if you could follow instructions. I really cannot say why someone else does anything.

Look, I agree that the situation sucks, but I don't think it rises to the level of 'unethical', and even if it did, it's not a crime. I understand that you feel used and abused by what happened, but what real harm has been done? In fact, you learned a couple of valuable lessons out of the whole endeavour, that you wouldn't want to work for this company anyway and that you will be much more careful when voluntarily sending out personal financial information in the future.

You sent the actual stubs and not copies? If you sent copies, why is her being in of posession of them a bad thing? Do you think she will hold onto them and do something with the information? What? What kind of information is on there? Don't you think she will just throw them away or shred them? I'm not following you here.

She said she emailed them, and unless I missed some tech development, Ima thinking that means a scan, so not the original.

And I hope she meant to say she gets paid 9 cpl and not .09 cpl. If you are going to send someone a copy of your paystub, at the very least you should black out your SS#. I would get in touch with the recruitor and ask her to shred the copies.

I was looking at my pay stubs. If your company uses ADP and you have direct deposit, then the very bottom of the document, the part that looks like a check except for the big "this is not a check" and "non-negotiable" signs, includes your bank account number and bank routing number. Mine only showed the last 4 digits of the social security number, but if the recruiter has your social security number, your name and your bank account number, then you could end up in serious financial trouble. I also noticed that one showed the file number which is part of the code to log into work at that company. If you use an obvious password (like you shouldn't), there is also the possibility, although probably remote, that the recruiter could log-on at your current employer as you and cause various kinds of mayhem. Isn't technology wonderful?

True. I guess the email part slipped by me. What I was responding to was her saying, "she is now in possession of my check stubs."
