I have Vista Ultimate and I could not figure out why my headphones would not work.......it is because they are not HD.
I am ready to throw Vista Ultimate out the window. None of my software is compatible; I cannot keep wasting so much time. I am going to use my old desktop, and search for a refurbished XP Pro.

Time to move on....

Vista incorporated a whole lot of stuff that was supposed to gladden the hearts of the recording industry by preventing piracy and instead just managed to make playing any kind of multimedia on the systems a nightmare for the average user.

You might check into driver availability for XP for the hardware installed in your new system. If you can find drivers for everything, or at least for everything incorporated in the motherboard plus replacements for any removable devices without XP support, then I would buy a retail or OEM copy of the XP operating system while you can still purchase one and convert your new Vista computer to XP. That's what I did with my most recent laptop/tablet computer purchase, since I couldn't find the hardware specs I wanted with XP preinstalled. You undoubtedly have a big hard drive, so you could add a second primary partition into which you could install and play around with configuring XP without wiping out the current Vista OS. If you can't make things work, then you'd have a copy of XP to install on a plain white-box computer system without operating system purchased from any local or online white-box computer supplier. (Note that you will need to make your own backup of your Vista partition and/or your new XP operating system partition when you do this--using the manufacturer-provided OEM restore disks thereafter will wipe out your new XP partition and just return Vista as originally received.)

Thank you 14tonks. Your advice is right on. I slept on all this, and have gone back to my original plan, which was purchasing a new Dell with XP Pro installed with the option of upgrading to Vista Ultimate.

The problem with Dell was they were backordered to July 28th (back to school and one of their manufacturing plants burned down in Malaysia ). I am going to keep using my Costco Ultimate (new job platform installed, etc.) and order my perfect setup from Dell. Costco has a 90-day return policy, so this should work. I will just use the AutoCorrect functions in Word and limp along until I get my Dell. I feel just like the commercial (shoulda gotta Dell). Then I will take my HP back to Costco.

I have an HP now and they won't downgrade??? to XP Pro without invalidating my warranty.

I am going to check into the price of HD headphones today, as I feel uncomfortable using speakers (even though I do have a private office. Hopefully, they don't cost a fortune. On the upside, I have certainly learned a lot in the last week.

I have Fios, so I could not move my desktop to my office without spending about $150 to install Fios.

Thanks for listening to my rant. This last week has been so frustrating; however, I now have a plan.

No computer manufacturer will support any change in operating system, or even in system partitioning, under warranty. That's because tech support ceased being manned by techs years ago and is now just call centers full of people reading scripts, scripts which are written to cover only the factory configuration.

You can do anything you want to a computer and still get it serviced under warranty as long as you keep the primary partition with original operating system intact and boot up only that when calling for tech support. Make and maintain a backup of your new computer configuration as well, because if you need to ship the computer back for service, you will first need to run your restore disks to wipe the drive and return it to factory-new configuration before shipping. That is how to do what you want with a Dell or other brand-name computer and still take advantage of your warranty for hardware or original OS problems.

No apologies necessary; Vista is the M$ monstrosity to end all monstrosities. If there were a way for the general public to force Microsoft to pay for the value of their time expended trying to troubleshoot or get things working correctly on that OS, we could reduce the 800-pound gorilla of software to about 8 pounds' worth of capital within a month.

My thoughts exactly...you have no idea how many times I have thought about calling MSFT. My 21-yo daughter works for MSFT and I am going to do something about this. Get this, MSFT employees work on XP, LOL.

I absolutely love my 4 GB RAM, no doubt, but Vista is ridiculous. What a crime to create a product that causes nothing but headaches and time lost for the consumer.

What were they thinking????

Who says they were thinking? (No slam on your daughter intended.) They do what they do because they can. They have no serious competition. I understand there are Macs and there is Linux and probably some other esoteric operating systems out there, but they don't have enough market share, particularly in the business world, to force a debugged, user-friendly, truly new and improved product out of Washington State first time, every time.

MSFT needs my daughter desparately. She is just the right age and a very bossy, aggresive individual. When she was a toddler, I always hoped these qualities would serve her well some day.

As she works her way up, she will dedicate herself unconditionally. She has a heart of gold, but will stand up to anybody.

I know I am her mama, but if she does continue with MSFT, it will improve. She is also a white-water rafting tour guide; she thinks it is fun when she gets thrown out of the boat. She has already saved lives in just 2 summers of rafting.

Change the subject....consumers are getting smarter all the time; we have to be in this economy. It is like in that movie (cannot remember name), we all need to open our windows and shout, "I am not going to take it anymore."

Thanks for your support and feedback....sometimes I start feeling it is just me and I am not smart enough to learn a new operating system.

It's not just you, Backagain. When I bought my laptop a couple of months ago, I shopped around until I found a small computer store that was able to order me a model with XP. I had heard so many negative things about Vista I wouldn't even try to deal with it. My desktops and laptop are happily Vista-free. \:\)

I have to get a new computer and I get Dell. I believe Dell stopped selling XP in June so I guess I am on the road to VISTA. It appears that you all are having trouble with it. Do you need HD headphones for all Vista or just that Ultimate program???

Quig, if you go through the small business section of Dell's site you can probably find sets with XP still as an option.
