Unfortunately, I typed a 25 page document on my laptop that I need to save on a disk and transfer over to my desktop to print. When I try to save it, it says I can't because it's read only. Can anyone help. I need this for the doctor who is going to court tomorrow morning!

Assuming this is a Word document, select tools, options, and then the security tab. Check to make sure that the "Read-only recommended" box is not checked.

Also try browsing to the file in Windows explorer or via My Documents. Right-click, properties, and try unchecking the Read Only box.

If you can't remove the "Read only" attribute from the file, the fix is very simple. A read-only document can't be saved as itself, but Save As works fine. Just save it to a different location or to the same location with a slightly modified file name.

Excellent suggestions all and I tried them all before I posted. Nothing worked. Then I dug around until I found the software for my Lexmark 125 and installed it on my laptop. I pulled the plug out of my desktop and plugged it into my laptop and printed the monstrosity. I still can't save it to a disk and don't know why, but at least I got it to print. I was just envisioning giving my laptop to doc and telling her to take it with her to the hearing tomorrow. How embarassing would that have been? Yikes!

Hmmmm, must be something more than just read-only going on there. Well, if it will print, you might try printing it to PDF to get it in a file form you can pass to your doc. There are a number of free PDF print drivers out there if you don't have one already.

I don't know. I'm still kind of shocked that it flatly refused to save it as a different document, like you suggested. That's always worked for me before. Don't know what happened this time but at least it's been printed and delivered to doc. I'll print another copy and scan it to my desktop and save it on a disk there for future reference. What a pain!
