I think most of us are aware by now that HRT turned out not to be all that big Pharma was trying to crack it up to be. Well, it appears their other attempt to generate huge profits from the aging female population may also have some unintended consequences:
Drugs to Build Bones May Weaken Them

If you are one of the many women convinced by your doctor that long-term Fosamax use is a small price to pay to prevent a broken hip in your old age, you may want to reconsider that. And if you have been on it several years and start having pain in your hips or thighs, pay attention to the warning!

I am more and more convinced that the only thing most preventative long-term drug therapies really work at preventing is a drop in pharmaceutical companies' bottom lines.

I think you're right; it's all money-driven. We always seem to find out later that a med that was supposed to be so wonderful isn't what it was cracked up to be or is downright harmful. Everywhere I go lately - especially my doc's office, everyone seems to be pushing that vaccine against cervical cancer and telling my I should get my 10-year-old daughter vaccinated. Even though my grandma had cervical cancer and my mom uterine cancer, I'm hesitant. I just don't think they know enough about the long term effects yet and I refuse to take chances with my daughter's health.

This really should be no great surprise. People seem to have totally lost track of the fact that all medicines are poisons--poisons with very useful and even life-saving properties in certain situations, but poisons none the less. I cannot imagine anything that radically changes your body's metabolism over a long period of time that is not likely to have undesirable side effects. It may well be that the risk-benefit ratio is still favorable in certain circumstances, but one should be very much aware at all times that it is a trade-off--and you should be sure that you really know exactly what you're trading for what before signing up for chronic medication of any kind.

Tonks, have you seen the latest commercial for osteoporosis prevention? First, there was Fosamax, but you had to remember to take it once a week. Then there was Boniva for those who found once a week too onerous. Now there is once-a-year Reclast for the woman who is just too busy to remember to take a pill once a month. The only catch is that it has to be given IV, so in addition to whatever it costs (I'm guessing quite a bit), you get a hospital bill for use of the infusion center. How did a woman like that remember to take the pill? Her insulin? An aspirin every day? Any other medication she's on? And we wonder why healthcare costs so much in this country?
