Hi, who funds MT Chat? I noticed that there is an advertisement for the Andrews School on this site. It made me wonder because everyone here recommends the Andrews School. Furthermore, it seems rather strange to me that schools accredited by the most respected national medical transcription accreditation organization (AHDI), which is a non-profit, could be invalid.

M-TEC has an add here and they are AHDI approved.

the most respected national medical transcription accreditation organization (AHDI),
I don't think many people here will agree with you on that.
I'm not sure what you mean by "which is a non-profit, could be invalid"
Andrews, M-Tec, and I guess VLC are all sponsers here. Plus the ads above probably pay to advertise here.
People recommend Andrews and M-TEC on this site for only one reason - they are the best online schools.

As noted, three schools are sponsors here. Two will get enthusiastic endorsements from almost everyone; one will generally not even be mentioned except by an occasional graduate who managed to luck into a job in spite of her schooling and still doesn't know what she wasn't taught.
If you are questioning the profit motive, why don't you question AHDI's motive for listing all the schools they do? They made quite a bit of money out of the approval process for each and every one of the schools on their "approved" list at a time when they were hovering on the edge of bankruptcy. Many of us feel that they totally sold out on what might have originally been a good idea for the industry because they were just not prepared to stand on their principles at the cost of losing some of their little remaining support and bankroll. You should remember that "non-profits" are still run by people, people who make a good living from doing so and have a vested interest in protecting that living.
This board is actually owned by Elsevier these days, who bought it from its original founders a while back. One of the conditions of sale was that the admins and moderators would continue to have a free hand in deciding what was acceptable and unacceptable community behavior, and that beyond that there would be no censorship. Elsevier, however, is free to take sponsorship and ad money from anyone it chooses, which has resulted in a couple of flaps here over the years from people who were upset at seeing some ads and/or sponsors. I think at this point most people understand they need to live with that, and at least everyone is free to contradict the ad propaganda in posts, even on a sponsor's own forum.

Sadly, the AHDI may be the most respected in some circles, but many MT's have precious little respect for the AHDI. AHDI accreditation means precious little in regards to the schools as 99.8% of the schools on the list are only on the list because they paid money to be - not because you can receive an adequate MT education at any of them, and for that the AHDI should be ashamed! Andrews and M-TEC are the ONLY schools that offer an excellent MT education in which its graduates are immediately employable in WAH positions if they so choose.

This statement is not correct. I am a graduate of Career Step. I got an at home job immediately upon graduation. I have been working for about 6 months, and I make 9 cpl (65 character with spaces). I also average a little over 200 lph. I know my experience is not typical of Career Step graduates, but your statement is very bold and certainly not correct in my case or in the case of some other graduates of Career Step.

I agree that they're not the only 2 schools where you can get a job after graduation. They are just the best 2, as far as being most likely to get a job right after graduation, a good-paying job. You can't compare them to CS, because there is NO comparison.

I disagree that "they" are the best 2, but that has been debated here ad nauseum.
This forum is a great source for info though.
amfitz, I went to CS as well.
As for the topic of THIS thread, sponsers... as was said above, anyone can pay to have their ad here. They just happen to have 2 really great schools on board here. ;)

Thanks, everyone, for your responses. Your posts were informative, and knowing relatively little about what schools are good or not, I wanted to know if this web site, where 2 schools are promoted and the rest of the AHDI schools disregarded, was valid or not. There's a lot of stuff written on the internet, and it is prudent to sort through things and determine who's right and who's wrong.

Absolutely true, and I'm sure everyone here commends you for having the intelligence to do that before choosing a school.
