Seeking Suggestions for Birthday Gift

I am totally at a loss for gift ideas for my goddaughter's 18th birthday. She is entering her senior in high school but is not immediately college bound. I would like to give her something that would be appreciated now but would also be of some significance when reality wallops her upside the head in few years. (Meaning: I don't want her to say, "Um, yeah, great. Auntie Em, thanks for the thesaurus; it will be invaluable on my Into the Wild walkabout."
Does anyone have anything they received at that age that still has meaning to you or have you given a gift that was intended to be motivational without being overtly so? (I hope that makes sense.)

When I graduated, my parents gave me a beautiful watch with the admonition that time was precious and not to waste it. I still have the watch and it still works after 27 years.

I got a pearl ring for my graduation 20 years ago. Pearl is my birthstone, but the person who gave it to me said she wanted to make sure I never went anywhere in life without at least one "pearl of wisdom."
It doesn't fit me anymore, but it's still in my jewelry box.

Thank you both for the great ideas! Those are very thoughtful gifts, and it is great that you still recall the sentiments that accompanied them.

The motivational gift that I received at age 18 was a simple birthday card with a glitter cake. I have it in my scrapbook. Another item was a new charm reading Happy 18th. My youngest son turned 18 this week. I gave him a card reading welcome to the adult world, which was very hard to write to him. We took him down to the bank for his own account, then down to open his own phone account. He is checking out colleges so I will still be on hand to answer any of his college course questions.

It may already be too late for this suggestion, but when you finally decide on a gift for your goddaughter, you should also buy a newspaper or favorite magazine for the date/month of her birthday and save it in something that will protect it for let's say 10 years. Then when she turns 28, you can show her a newspaper of events that happened 10 years ago. Or you could save it and give it to her when she gets married. My dad bought all us kids newspapers the day we were born. When we turned 18, he gave us the newspapers. It was really cool to see how things have changed. Just a thought.

Oh, man! So, how hard did you cry after you opened his first accounts? I thought I'd feel a relief once my kids started getting older, but I find myself still trying to wrap the umbilical cord around them to reel them back!! My oldest son just turned 16. The thought about him behind the wheel just kills me. And my daughter, she's 13! Ah, the nightmare begins!

I opened a savings account for my daughter when she was 18 months old and she goes with me to the bank on payday and I give her $10 to put in her account. The ladies at the bank just love her

Not exactly sentimental, but my aunt and uncle bought me luggage for my graduation. It is a beautiful luggage set and I still have it and have put it to good use! I took it to college and use it for vacation.

I wanted to find that umbilical cord lots of times. In CA, the driving rules maybe different here since we had to drive with teenagers for a year. I believe there is less stomach tightness for me now.
I also like the newspaper clip idea to view ten years later. I can see changes already, since both my son's girlfriends get along so well, we have had family dinners already when the boy's come to visit.
I do find I have more time to fill but instead of pacing that I had perceived, I concentrate on my MT course and paint the unused rooms for an MT library. Just imagine a whole room full of books. I will be in heaven.

BF, her mother did something very similar for her birthday gift. She had saved newspapers from each birthday and compiled clippings from those along with a pictures and a synopsis personal events and milestones in her life each year into a scrapbook. I wish I could explain it better; it was really, really nice.
I will make note of the suggestions above because graduation gifts always flummox me too.
Thanks again!
