I just lost my dictation file by accidentally saving a blank file with the name of my dictation file. PLEASE tell me there is a way to get it back. I'm using Microsoft Word Professional.

Unless you have your Word set to create backup copies of all files (Tools>Options, Save tab, Always create backup copy), you are probably out of luck. If you are creating backups, the last version of your file should be in the same location with a wbk extension instead of doc.

There might be some bits of the old file you could find with a good file recovery tool, since your blank document is probably smaller than the previous version you saved over. However, the first rule of recovery tools is that any changes made to the hard drive lessen the likelihood of successful recovery, and downloading and installing a new program is a sizable change. I'm not sure I'd even bother to try unless it is a really huge file and worth it to you to gamble the time in the hopes of recovering a few segments of it. File recovery tools work best when applied immediately on a hard drive from which you have deleted a file, not saved over it with a different version.

If you haven't shut Word down, you might be able to retrieve some of the text from the temporary asd file. You may need to change your Windows settings to show hidden files, then change your view to Details in the File/Open dialog box -- this might help you recognize the file by the date. Try opening the file with the Recover Text From Any File option. This method of retrieving a file does not always work.

Get in the habit of immediately naming files when opening a new document and pressing Ctrl + S often while working. This is the only true way to ensure that you do not lose your work.
