He was a professor at Carnegie Mellon who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer 2 years ago, docs told him he had 6 months to live at that point. He passed away this morning.

I bought his book The Last Lecture and it was a GREAT book...I've read it twice already. I highly suggest it to anyone looking for a terrific book on how to truly live and have fun doing it.

I am saddened by his passing, but glad that he took the time to leave behind a wonderful legacy. That is a phenomenal book. I have given it as a gift many times.

I just knew it was going to happen soon. I had been checking his web site and he hadn't entered anything for about a month so I knew things must be going badly. Today, however, traffic at the web site must be absolutely manic - you can't access it at all.

He was diagnosed in September 2006 and given 6 months to live. He made it almost 2 years and accomplished SO much in those 2 years - writing his wonderful, tearjerking book - being a fabulous and dedicated father and husband and all-around family man - educating and mentoring many virtual reality students - and, helping to educate the rest of the world on the horrible disease that is pancreatic cancer and trying to fight the disease and raise money for a cure. We have lost a great man. To his family - so sorry for your loss.

I am just now reading this. I had never heard of him, but now want to get to know more about him.

My mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer just after Thanksgiving 2005. She died in January 2006 (just a few weeks after being diagnosed)at the age of 67. Pancreatic cancer is, indeed, a horrible, horrible illness. You don't even usually realize anything is wrong until it is pretty much too late. I don't think they even have any screening tests for it yet.

If you watch the lecture and read the book, you won't be sorry you did. You will probably cry a bit, but that's actually healthy.

I lost my dad to pancreatic cancer that spread to the liver in September 2003. He died 8 days after he went into the hospital with severe pain and jaundice but no idea what was wrong with him. Definitely a sneaky damned cancer.
