Hello:

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am in the process of filling in online applications. When I make a mistake in the online application, I cannot go back and correct it; I have to start all over. Is there a shortcut key or something I can do to correct this? When I use MSWord, I just click on OVR.

Perfect. I just made a mistake in this post and it did exactly the same thing. I would try a search, but I do not know how to name it. I tried OVR, with no results.

Apologize in advance if this topic is listed somewhere else...

Thank you,

backagain

I'm a bit confused. The insert key toggles between insert mode and overtype mode (which Word shows as INS and OVR, respectively). I generally type in insert mode and use my backspace or delete key as necessary. Most of the Word manipulations (Ctrl-Bksp to delete one word to the left of the cursor) work here, as well.

Thank you for your help. I will try and explain.

The problem is that (sometimes) when I make a mistake typing (in these boxes, not MSWord), I hit "backspace" and then try and resume typing. When I resume typing, I type over words already typed and "lose" them. I end up backspacing and starting all over again.

I printed a list of Word Shortcuts.

Thanks again,

lss

backagain, I have an "insert" button at the bottom of the number pad on my keyboard (not part of any word processing program, just on the keyboard) and it allows insert or overstrike when typing, for example, in these boxes. Nothing looks different, you just need to test whether you are in insert or not.

On many keyboards the INS key is right beside the Backspace key and it is easy enough to hit it unintentionally when going for a backspace. Since nothing seems to happen right away (other than some indicator on some word processing programs), some people don't realize that they have changed that funtion from INSert to OVeRwrite. This sounds like what the OP is getting/doing.

You learn something new every day. There it is, right next to Delete, End, etc. Thank you so much. I just tried it and it works just perfectly.

You just saved me from a lot of headaches and frustration.

Thank you again,

lss

Thanks for the information. Your post came in at the same time I replied to someone else, so I did not catch your reply. I do appreciate your help.

What you explained is exactly what was happening to me. There are many functions on my keyboard that I am not familiar with.

I often spend hours trying to figure out something simple. I do enjoy the process; however, the help I get here on mtchat is invaluable (and, I waste so much time not asking for help.

Thanks again.
