Cuil (pronounced "cool") makes its debut today and is the brainchild of former Google employees.
Cuil
I haven't played around with it much, but the search results format is definitely different.

Visually pleasing, but does not seem to do exact phrase searching very well, and I see nothing to beat out Google Advanced Search. Perhaps they will develop it more as they go.

I'm unimpressed with the fact that I searched a term, got their dropdown menu, clicked on one of the choices, and got "We didn't find any results for xxx." Well, hellooooo, then why the heck did you suggest it to me?

I have played with it some. There is not a fuzzy search feature, at least not yet, and if you enter a combination of three random words, it often will not find anything. However, I do like the tabs option to to more specific information, and I like the results format. Also, they claim to collect no data from users, unlike Google.
Based on the limited test drive, I would have to agree with Trops, it does not compare to Google Advanced or Google Scholar. I think this would be fine for everyday use, or if you need to verify information, but as fair as using it to divine mystery phrases from poor dictators it does not seem to be as helpful.

Interesting! I liked parts of it. They are new, so they have a few kinks that they will hopefully work out over time.
Ahem! One is related to my own web site.
I searched for The Andrews School Medical Transcription.
I got our web site link, but there is a picture of a strange woman on it. There's nothing wrong with her picture. It's a very nice picture. It just isn't me and anyone looking at the picture would assume it was. How did that picture get put together with my web site?! Oh well. {shrug}

Hehe Linda.
Seems to be just a random image they (Cuil) placed next to the link for your school. I'd be happy with that picture though. At least the woman gives the impression of being a professional. http://www.cuilimg.com/imgsrv?i=020b0a:1562408970174716
Be thankful they didn't post a picture of a SAHM with 10 kids sitting on her lap as she throws a tupperware party, wearing pajamas and sporting DMV-length fingernails all the while transcribing. lol

Actually, Google does that to me all the time. It has nothing on what I asked about, and it says, "Did you mean [whatever]? And so I click on that, only to find out they have nothing on that either! It drives me bonkers (which I must admit is an easy thing to do).

Later Monday night I tried to show my husband how cuil didn't work right, and of course it worked perfectly.
Kind of like taking your car to the shop...

Asugar515, that's exactly what I thought at the time. I started to say that, but thought nobody would understand what I meant. I'm glad you did.

I think that photo belongs to a . . . different . . . Andrews School. When I checked, it was associated with a private girl's academy.
Of course, an Andrews School in Kenya had a picture of a golfer in a sand trap. Would golf be something one would naturally associate with private academies in Kenya?
Our listing seemed to be some kind of seal of approval, but I did not recognize it.

Redpen,
My initial impression of stock images being used has proven false as I read Cuil's FAQs.
Seems that image is floating all over the place now looking for a home, and your school's image is replaced with this one currently - http://www.cuilimg.com/imgsrv?i=020610:1318318401106162 representing James Andrews School of Golf (if my eyes read that tiny writing correctly).
You may want to contact Cuil directly and even provide them with your school logo or hey, even a picture of Linda! Yikes, last thing you'd want is an image of a golfer in a sandtrap representing your school.

7. You have images beside your results. How do you pick which pictures to use? We know from our research that people can make better and quicker decisions about relevance and quality when they can see an image from the website. We do our best to take images from Web pages that accurately reflect the content of the website. Many websites are full of images, so we use advanced algorithms to determine the best image to show the user.
Seems their advanced algorithms have kinks to be worked out for websites that do not contain much artwork, such as The Andrews School.

Today mine has a large building which could be a private school. I like it! It has nothing to do with The Andrews School, but it's a nice building.

Does it have ivy? It needs to have ivy. A school just isn't a school without ivy.
