Is there a tendon or ligament in the "arch" of the foot that would cause pain in a distance runner? Or could it be plantar fasciitis?

All I can see that looks remotely close is the plantar fascia.

No podiatrist or sports medicine docs around these parts.

There's a plantar ligament. Is that the same as plantar fascia ligament?

It's right in the middle of the plantar aspect of the foot between the heel and the ball, so it must be the plantar ligament. Guess I will look at some sports medicine sites.

Thanks

I am interested in this topic also since I had stitches in the arch of the foot. There is a tendon there on the third layer.
I found both ligaments and tendons in the arch area from the Wikipedia found by google.
I looked up definitions first:
Tendons connect muscles to bones.
Ligaments connect bone to bone.
The tendon that I had stitches in was the Flexor hallucis longus muscle in the third layer of the arch area.

You can find more information from this website about plantar metatarsal ligaments. Look under muscles and tendons.

Let me know if you find more information.

I got him some pretty good Spenco orthotics and they just rubbed awful blisters on his arches.

This has caused him such a lot of pain that he actually stopped running.

At any rate, he's back at college now and has made an appointment with a podiatrist. I'll mark this thread and let you know what we find out.

I believe that you are right with plantar fascia. I had plantar fascitis and the podiatrist told me to stretch the tendon in order to help relieve the pain. The tendon becomes too tight and has to be stretched.

I hope that helps.

Just wondered why it would suddenly flare up in a distance runner. He's been running for years . . .

Was the pain in your heel?

Yes, the pain was in my heel. It started one day after I had been on my feet all day (why? It wasn't the first time!). I went for treatment which helped, but it took about 4 months for it to be totally gone. From time to time I can feel the tendon tighten and I will stretch it out and it's fine. The doctor also gave me a shot in the foot which helped as well.

I don't know why it would show up in a runner. Has he been diagnosed? It's not a stress fracture? Does he stretch after running?

No, he hasn't been to the doc yet, he's one of those darn stoics. I don't think it's a stress fracture because it is in both feet. He does stretch, strength training, yoga, etc.

He does have an appointment in September. I'm curious to find out what the heck is going on. He just started running again on an indoor track, hasn't flared up yet. I'm wondering if it was just because he was running on pavement or something.

He did say it felt like the tendons were bunching up on him though. Things that make you go hmmmmmm . . .

Pear:

That's an excellent site. Thanks so much for that information.

It looks like it could be the lumbricals, which apparently are muscles of the sole of the foot. So I guess it's feasible it could be from running on pavement as opposed to the track.
