Edited to add that I do not have a problem with people learning to read with phonics, but spelling phonetically, in my opinion, is just wrong.

I guess next they'll be saying 3 + 3 = 5 is okay because it's close enough.

We need some way to distinguish the educated from those who can't be bothered.
Accepting things being done any old way just so you don't have to learn the correct way ... that's just wrong. I hate that.

I don't think that will be the problem. What we need is some way to ensure that the educated do not become outcast due to the majority being dumbed down.

From the 1930s into the 1970s, the Chicago Tribune tried simplified spelling. It was a pet project of the owner, Col. Robert McCormick. They finally gave up on it when he died, although his attention had been diverted for years while he went after FDR and the New Deal and got Dewey elected president (she smiles). I gathered that the advertisers and his copy editors were more unhappy with his spelling changes than anyone else.
There is still a Society for Simplified Spelling. One of their points is that it would be even easier to make English the universal language if our written word reliably looked anything like the way it actually sounded. I must say Spanish is much easier to learn in that respect (except for the directed accents).
Many of the Tribune's changes were eventually accepted: ax instead of axe, traveled instead of travelled, catalog instead of catalogue, program instead of programme, color instead of colour, til instead of until, ad instead of advertisement, thru instead of through and altho instead of although to name a few.

Glory, I had to double check the name on the left, because your post sounded like Tonks!
What we need is some way to ensure that the educated do not become outcast due to the majority being dumbed down. I think in some cases, I think it's too late for that, which is really sad.

I'll take that as a compliment, Deb, as I enjoy Tonks' posts. Not sure how Tonks will feel about it, though (she shrugs with wry grin).
I agree with you that the educated - or maybe I should say those who want to be educated - are already being outcast. Have we forgotten what it felt like to be called "geek", "nerd", "so not cool" or "teacher's pet" in school just because we were good students?

I've noticed a dramatic decline in the ability of applicants to pass the pre-enrollment exam for our school. There are also more phone calls from parents of grown students scolding the instructors for 'discouraging' their 42-year-old children by criticizing their work or giving them a poor grade. They tell me they enrolled in the course to be encouraged, not to have their work critiqued. I'm wondering if this is going to be the norm in a few years. I sure hope not.
On a happier note, the exceptions to that dramatic decline are often just as extreme to the 'excellent' side.
This is my day off. Why am I thinking about these things. In fact, I'm ready to go relax and not think at all!

You raise a number of troubling points in your post, Linda. The more that schools teach to the "accountability" tests and the more that they spend time on test taking methods (i.e., how to be a better guesser on multiple guess tests), the less time is actually spent teaching children to read, write and calculate. Multiple guess tests also cannot evaluate writing ability.
Dramatic differences between excellent and poor may also indicate the vast disparity in school funding. Some schools have decent facilities, up-to-date equipment and books and can attract good teachers. Others don't and can't. Sure, against all odds, great students can come out of poor schools: Just enough so that the claim can be made and those who wish to can turn their backs on the inequality, but not so many as to make it routine and threaten the status quo.
I think we also have a generation (or more) who are wrapped up in the self-esteem mantra. Everybody gets a prize just for showing up. Everyone is a winner. We don't want to hurt anybody's feelings. Some kids know this is a line of bull that leaves them feeling hollow, that they need to actually accomplish something to build self-esteem, but others don't, and they buy it hook, line and sinker.
