A man agrees to plead guilty to murder in exchange for never having to put up with prison food. See here. It's worthy of the Readers Digest "That's outrageous" category.

I'm not seeing the downside here.
The taxpayers won't have to pay for his food (admittedly a small savings), but it will place a target on his back from within the prison population. Chances are better than even that this convict won't be serving his whole sentence and will leave the prison early, on a body bag.

I don't see where it says or implies that he's going to get that food all the time once he's in prison anyway. It appears to be a one-time (or maybe twice) thing.

You are probably right. Excerpt:Durham agreed to plead guilty to murder — but only if he could get a break from jail food. The judge agreed and granted Durham a feast of KFC chicken, Popeye's chicken, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, carrot cake and ice cream.

I think his new wife gets the best deal. She doesn't have to cook for him, she knows where he is at night and he's not underfoot.
