Yum or Yuck? Chocolate-covered bacon
I am one of those people who is gastronomically adventurous and will try just about anything, but at the thought of this particular combination I shuddered. Then I read down to the cotton candy/foie gras combination mentioned in the article and was totally repulsed.
Now though, I have started to recall some of the odd food combinations I have eaten and enjoyed, much to my chagrin on occasion. I might be inclined to try it just to see for myself. Knowing my luck, I would become hooked and end up being hunted down by vigilante cardiologists and dietitians.

What, no chili in that chocolate (thinking mole sauce here)?
Sweet and salty is a classic combo, so I expect this is not nearly as disgusting as it might at first sound.
And have no fear, dark, dark chocolate is the new miracle nutrient, so how could this be bad for you?
Then I read down to the cotton candy/foie gras combination mentioned in the article and was totally repulsed.
I'm sure if they deep fry it in corn batter and put it on a stick, it, too, will find a market.

It was the salty-sweet that appealed to me, but I can't quite get past the meat as candy concept.

Ah yes, our great state fair pastime, see which state can lead the nation in deep-fried foods on a stick. I believe someone sales spaghetti and meatballs on a stick at the Minnesota state fair and the Texas state fair has deep fried Coke. If you fry it, they will come...

It's not just Americans. I think I can blame Julie W. for pointing me toward this site, which demonstrates how the Scots are solving the problem of supporting an aging population. Be sure to go to the end of the article for links--everything from candy bars to cheeseburgers, proving your last statement beautifully.
LOL--it would've been easy to steer this in an Iron Chef direction, too (bacon ice cream, anyone?) Why is it so fascinating to watch people make things you would never want to encounter IRL?

This has been going on for ages in England. The first thing I remember the chip shops selling that was different was a battered, deep fried Mars bar (Milky Way over here). If nobody warned you, the first time you tried one you ended up with a badly burned tongue from the piping hot caramel. I must admit, they were pretty good. :-)
There was a show on the Food Network (I think) that showed all the things the crazy Brits were battering and throwing in the fryer.

At one of my oldest sons baseball games this year I was able to try a deep fried oreo. At first I thought that sounded horrible, but it was really, really good. What I still think is disgusting though was the deep fried dill pickle my husband ate!

I ate deep-fried pickles in New Orleans a few years ago, and they were surprisingly delicious!

Did anyone ever watch that short-lived show Andy Richter Controls the Universe (at least I think that's what it was called)? Anyway, there was an episode where they were deep frying everything. And I mean EVERYTHING. When they ran of food, they started deep frying office supplies. I remember them eating a pencil. It was hilarious!

I thought I had seen pretty much everything that could be cooked on a stick...until DH and I went to the Wisconsin State Fair this past weekend. We passed a food booth that advertised DEEP FRIED MAC AND CHEESE ON A STICK!!! We didn't check it out because we were tired and ready to go home, but here is an article from the Journal Sentinal about it. http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=780170
Maybe next year...

Hmm...Sonic drive in used to offer pickleos (battered and fried slices of pickle) several years ago. I don't know if they still do. Around here cheese-stuffed jalapenos, either deep fried or roasted, are popular. The deep fried Oreos I've had, yum!
Chocolate can actually work really well with savory. I've made a Guinness stew which calls for a bit of dark chocolate. Very good!
