It's Olympics time and I'm glued to the tele for the next 16 days.
Anyone else?
So far, the US of A is out in front with 3 medals. One gold, one silver, and one bronze in fencing.
Tonight is swimming. Go Phelps and Torres!

I've only ever been a very casual Olympic viewer. I mainly just watch gymnastics and imagine that I can do those things! I have never watched the opening ceremonies. What a show last night was, though! Amazing! My favorite part was the torch lighter running/flying around the stadium and then lighting the torch! I was touched by the little boy who walked with Yao Ming, too.

I like the diving, but don't think I'll have time to watch much this year.
It was better for me a few years ago when I had a 10-foot analog satellite dish and could watch the Olympics on Canadian TV, their coverage was always much better. But we lost so many channels when the channels went digital (yet the price increased instead of decreasing) so we gave up on it and got DISH TV.

I'm a volleyball fan and I, too, like watching gymnastics and imagining I could do those things :o). I had to work and missed the opening ceremonies but I did get to watch volleyball yesterday. I prefer summer Olympics over winter.

Did anyone see the story about the father-in-law of the men's volleyball coach getting killed? What a sad way to start the games.

Yes - and his daughter (married to the volleyball coach) is an ex-Olympian herself (volleyball player). I pray that her mother recovers - she is in critical condition in the hospital.

An article in our paper this morning discussed how the Chinese government has spent the last 7 years trying to "make over" Bejing right down to getting rid of junky cars on the road and the street people who slept in doorways. Guess they didn't pay as much attention to the psychos running around. I too hope that poor woman recovers; I wonder if she even realizes her husband is gone.

I have been more than impressed with what I have seen so far. Unfortunately, the women's gymnastics team isn't quite living up to expectations.
But, my goodness, did anyone catch last nights men's relay in swimming? On around 11:30 here last night. I was so excited, I was jumping on the bed! It is being touted as the best swim race in history. So exciting!!!! If you didn't catch it, I think you may be able to pull it up on NBC Olympics and watch the replay. It is definitely worth it. I think I have turned into a Michael Phelps groupie. Man oh man, if I were 20 years younger.
National Geo had dedicated an entire issue on China a few months back. It went into some of the details of preparing for these games. I wasn't impressed. China is in turmoil, well it has been hasn't it for longer than I can remember. But they put on a pretty face. Disturbing.

I watched the swim relay! It was incredible! We were jumping up and down, too, and laughing right along with them. The women's race right before it was a nail biter, too. Katie Hoff was thisclose to that gold medal and lost it on the last stroke by 0.08 seconds. My favorite part of the Olympics is watching the faces of the winners when they realize they've won or broken a record. They get so excited. We were watching the gymnastics, too, and the toddlers learned how to do somersaults because of it haha. They are 2 and 4 and were somersaulting all over the living room.
We watched the synchronized diving, too, and a bit of the fencing (Yay! A sweep!) interviews and highlight reels. And W. was on for a bit talking with Bob Costas. Bob says "Are you going to go watch any more events, Mr. President?" and George says, "I want to go watch the swimming if you would ever let me off of this set." haha

I was quite excited that Britain won a gold medal in the cycling road race. I am so used to us just ending up with maybe a couple of bronze medals.
I was flipping to all 3 channels this weekend and I think I ended up watching about 9 different things. I cheer for the US, UK, and Australia.

Our two are US and Argentina (my husband's side of the family). But they are never really prominent in anything but soccer!

Unfortunately, the women's gymnastics team isn't quite living up to expectations. I noted that as well. Did you notice how the floor routines have changed a bit in that more emphasis was on the running passes, with rather lackluster choreography in the routines between the passes? I thought some of the Russian women had much better floor routines than the American competitors.

I didn't see the routines before. Only the performances last night, and only caught floor. But I saw that they were down one gymnast with the first two performers making some pretty big mistakes with the last two picking them back up. Nothing they did, yeah, was very impressive.
I was more impressed with China which were the only two that I had time to watch. Did you hear the bit about the suspicion that the Chinese team had underage girls? I tell you, one them looked all of 12 maybe. Little peanut.

Did you hear the bit about the suspicion that the Chinese team had underage girls? Missed all that, as I tuned in only last night (been out of town, again). I wonder what other channels are covering the Olympics besides NBC; need to surf around......

Now I am very confused. I am watching the synchronized platform diving, and they are clearly saying that Thomas Daley from Great Britain is only 14.
Also, one announcer just asked the other why the divers go directly to the showers after a dive, and she says, "...to get warm, and also to stay loose...and have fun." Uh, what?

NiteNinja--I won't swear that this is right, but I think that each sport can set the age limit. I know for a fact that there have been many swimmers who were less than 16, and there was never a question about their age.
Also, having been to hundreds of swim meets in my life (my daughter is a swimmer), I can assure you that the divers are a big bunch of weenies! They cannot stand to be cold, and the water has to be warm in the diving area. I have been to meets where they bring a HOT TUB out on the deck, and the divers all crowd into it between their dives!! No swimmers allowed, though. Nobody cares if they get cold, but they are a lot tougher than the divers. You can see that I am prejudiced.
By the way, you have a world class faciity in Indy. I have been there more times than I could count. My daughter will be a senior in college this year, so my days at the Natatorium are numbered now.
Hope I am not too far off about the age limit rules. Apologize in advance if I am wrong because I didn't check the facts. Lynda

I think you are right. Gymnastics seems to be the only event that has an age limit.
I am a student at IUPUI, so I can go watch the Olympians practice whenever I want at the Natatorium. However, I never seem to be on campus when they are there or they train when I am in class.
The funny part about the quote was the "and to have fun" part. She essentially said divers go to the showers together after a dive to have fun.

Hey Piglet, did you see Phelps win the gold last night? Awesome competition!

Women's beach volleyball was good too! USA kicked butt!

Last night a local girl (Margaret Hoelzer) won the bronze in the 100M backstroke (U.S. took the gold, too). Pretty cool! I think the 200M backstroke is her better race, so maybe she can bring home a gold, too.
I love watching the beach volleyball, but can those suits get any smaller? I don't think so!
Phelps is incredible...
