Noteworthy story of a woman who took action when she thought she'd have to wait too long to have a tumor removed from her abdomen. She lives in Canada. Fortunately for her, there was $$ and US healthcare which thankfully is not yet fettered by high rates of long waits....yet.

Wow. She is a lucky woman. Thank goodness she took matters into her own hands instead of waiting for the tentative surgery date. Thanks for sharing the story.

Maybe not where you live, but certainly in California many people, myself included, have had to wait more than a couple of weeks for surgery to remove a known cancer. Getting operating room time in Southern California is getting more and more difficult.

Getting operating room time in Southern California is getting more and more difficult. Universal healthcare will likely exacerbate that situation.

I can't believe anyone would expect that poor woman to wait 4-6 weeks with that thing growing bigger every day. Ridiculous. I do wonder, however, why she couldn't find anyplace closer to her home in Alberta than Texas. There are some good hospitals in Washington aren't there?

If I read this article right, out of a potential patient pool of 3.5 million (and change), 84 people were both unhappy enough and had the means to seek fee for service treatment outside of Canada. Of these, roughly half were reimbursed by the province as having a legitimate reason for doing so. Perhaps this is why, despite the occasional unfortunate case, we do not hear of Canadians rioting in the streets to trade their healthcare system in for what we have in the US.
It also appears that this unfortunate lady had no problem getting her chemotherapy in Edmonton and has no complaints about that. Now I don't know what regimen she was on, but I do know that there are regimens out there that go for $20,000 to $30,000 a month. Here in the States, once you've met your deductible, at 80/20 that's still a bill of $4000-$6000 a month for several months at a time. How many of us could afford that? According to some studies, not a lot as they show medical bills to be the chief reason for filing for bankruptcy in the US.

Glory: In addition to fee-for-service treatment outside of Canada, private clinics are available to Canadian citizens, and these are being utilized more and more.
I was up attending a wedding a few weeks ago, and an aunt's father had just recently had back surgery done in a private clinic. They chose the private clinic because he was in debilitating pain and the waiting list was well over a year. They paid $7,000 for the procedure, were absolutely thrilled with the care he received, and would likely go this route again if the need should arise.
I do know of several private orthopaedic clinics in the Vancouver area, though I'm not sure about other specialties.
I'd be interested to know what percentage of the population uses private clinics for services.
