Good morning, all! I have a question regarding a procedure note doctor is dictating on a patient who has an EGD and G-tube placement.
This is the sentence:
The stomach was then sounded with a 25-gauge needle using a *Foutch* maneuver. The trocar was then passed into the stomach.
I have two questions about this sentence. The first is, he spelled Foutch for me, but I like to verify spellings when it a new term for me so I get it right, because we all know what great spellers doctors can be. I cannot seem to find that particular spelling, or anything that really sounds like it. I don't have a GI specific terminology book, but I checked Dorland's under maneuver and for Foutch, as well as my Tessier Surgical Word Book. I have also checked Google. I am capitalizing it at this point because I am assuming right now it's named after somebody, but have no idea.
The second question is more about the structure of the sentence. After the word "needle" should there be a period so the sentence would read this way: The stomach was then sounded with a 25-gauge needle. Using a Foutch maneuver, the trocar was then passed into the stomach. The cadence of his dictating pattern is kind of off right there, so it's throwing me for a loop.
Okay, anyone who would like to point me in the right direction, I really appreciate it!
Thank you, JoAnna

I think there should be a period after sounded. I don't THINK you sound with a needle exactly, know what I mean? (But you may put a trocar in with a needle). The other word--no idea.

After sounded, hmmm....I didn't even hear it that way. Like I said, his dictating pattern was a little off, throughout the whole report actually, and he is a doctor for whom I type on a somewhat regular basis. Just a weird day for him, I guess. I know what you mean about sounding with a needle.
Thanks for your help!

This is one of those Google hits of a whole book, that you can't copy from, but if you google "foutch maneuver gastrostomy" the first hit describes exactly your procedure. Check the bottom of the first column on page 654 in the book that comes up. And I think sounded fits fine and your punctuation is correct.
sound "an instrument to be introduced into a cavity to detect a foreign body or to dilate a stricture"--verbize this to get using such an instrument
