An ortho PA is describing AP and lateral x-rays of the wrist "as well as Merchant view of the left hand." Merchant view for the hand? I've never heard of it for any other place except the knee. This is an elderly patient who has been experiencing wrist pain after using a walker. The x-rays showed "sclerotic changes in the distal radius suggestive of arthritis." Is it truly Merchant or did she mean something else? What might that something else be, or should I just flag this?

Hey there, fellow Hoosier! Missp from Indiana here!

I type x-rays all the time (just about all I type anymore). I have never heard of a Merchant's view of the hand either. I too am thinking that maybe she meant to say something else, but hard telling what that would be. If it were me, I would leave a blank.

.....Oh, since she is on a walker, I wonder if they are also getting a knee study, and maybe she meant to say "left KNEE". Again, though, I think I would just leave a blank.

Hi, Missp! I've seen you on the board, but I didn't realize you were from Indiana. I'm from the 'burbs of Indy.

Thanks for answering. I think she meant something else, because she made no mention of results that would pertain to the knees nor were her knees discussed anywhere else. I flagged it for QA.
