I'm transcribing for either an Irish or Aussie doc, and he states HEENT & I. Does anyone know what this means, or how to type it? He has also dictated HEENTI before.

Thanks!

Rae

Total guess here--does he dictate a separate heading for skin? If not maybe the I is for integument. Many docs seem to put skin as the next heading.

Under that heading, does the doc dictate anything about the skin?

I thought about that too - integumentary - since he doesn't dictate anything for skin. But just saying "I" is about as clear as mud if it is what he means...

AHA, Trops, GMTA I don't feel so out-of-left-field if you thought of it too!

My guess would be integument too? I'm not sure what else that "I" would stand for.

Ann, I cannot possibly tell you how honored I feel for you to use GMTA and my name in the same post.

I'm wondering if he's saying, 'eye,' even though it's redundant because that's what one of the e's in HEENT stands for. It's not as if docs are never ever redundant. :o)

Just one more thought, trout, even though this subject may be dead. Is there any chance he's saying HEENT: Eye and then giving a little information about his eye exam, such as conjunctivae clear?

I've had docs who will do that. They'll dictate HEENT and then cover each item, i.e., Eyes: Conjunctivae clear. Ears: TMs occluded by cerumen. Nose: No nasal discharge.

Any chance your doc was doing something along those lines or did you ever get it figured out?

I too thought at first he was dictating "HEENT: Eye:", but then he would skip over it entirely sometimes and say, "No jugular venous distention", without even dictating anything for neck. I really do think he is just saying HEENT&I for integument now.

I have direct access to ask the physician, so I just asked him. I still haven't heard back from him yet, but if/when I do, I will post back here for those who are curious...

Everybody just stop. He is saying, repeat after me, HEEN/TEE, phonetically... heen-ti, as in HEEN plus T. Just transcribe it as HEENT: He is probably just elderly. I remember docs saying this way, way back.

Or he might say it as HEEN-TIE or HEENT-EYE, but it is the same thing. I had one years back that absolutely drove me insane with this, and he looked at me like I was crazy when I just finally questioned him about it. I think he wanted to be creative or something, you know, like a physician who is really a frustrated artist. It's a trick to make you nuts.
