How about a little Lab Lingo? We expose our students to this in some of our online classes, but we thought you might enjoy doing these types of exercises here as well! New MTs, seasoned MTs, and MTs in training are all welcome to participate.

Take your time, and be sure to use your references. I'll check back at the end of the week. Have fun with it!

Exercise #1

Name the most common lab tests administered for hepatitis, and explain what a positive test result would indicate? I'll give you an example under Hepatitis B, but there are several others.

Hepatitis A?

Hepatitis B?
HBsAg indicating acute or chronic HBV (carrier), infectivity

Hepatitis C?

Hepatitis D?

Hepatitis E?

On your mark, get set, GO!!

Susan

Hey Susan!

I like these kinds of things.

This is a good one too that I had to look up despite being a former MLT.

Here's one section:

Hepatitis C
anti-HCV done by ELISA and confirmed with PCR
Indicates infection with HCV or carrier state but not infectivity or immunity.

Good answer, Sylvia. I figured you would want to participate in this, based on your former lab background. I'm glad it made you stop to think and caused you to have to research.

I'll check back again as time allows. Have a good week.

This probably wasn't a fun exercise, but the information is useful, so I will post some of the information I have on this for you to use.

Hepatitis A
Anti-HAV (total) -- Indicates past infection and immunity.
Anti-HAV (IgM) -- Indicates acute hepatitis A.

Hepatitis B
HBsAg -- Indicates acute or chronic infection HBV (carrier) infectivity.
HBeAg -- Indicates acute or chronic HBV (carrier), high degree of infectivity.
Anti-HBc (total) -- Indicates a current or previous infection or a carrier.
Anti-HBc(IgM) -- Indicates a recent acute infection.
Anti-HBe -- Indicates disease resolution and reduced infectivity.
Anti-HBs -- Indicates recovery and immunity.

Hepatitis C
Anti-HCV -- Indicates acute, chronic, or previous hepatitis C infection.

Hepatitis D
Anti-HD -- Indicates past or current hepatitis D infection.

Hepatitis E
None
