I have run across this phrase/word recently and I an not sure how to type it. I have found hits on google for both. This doctor has a habit of making up his own words and I am not sure if this is the case either. Any ideas?

I use "neural foramina" because it is listed in my HPI Orthopedic/Neurology Words and Phrases, Second Edition, as well as my Stedman's Orthopedic and Rehab Words, Fourth Edition. "Neuroforamina" does not appear in either of these references, but it might be okay since it seems to be in common usage.

Per Dorland's electronic I just found this:

neural foramen, f. intervertebrale.

foramen intervertebra˘le, [TA] intervertebral foramen: the passage formed by the inferior and superior notches on the pedicles of adjacent vertebrae; it transmits a spinal nerve and vessels.

So now I am wondering if I can just add the -al to foramen. This doctor drives me crazy sometimes. One of his favorite words is erythemic. "His oropharynx is slightly erythemic." Good thing I can make changes.

Thanks for your help. Have a great night.

I don't have any references to give you, only 5 years of radiology. I have frequently typed neural foramen (singular), neural foramina (plural), and neural foraminal (relating to the neural foramen). (as in neural foraminal encroachment for example)

Oh, I always use 2 separate words...

I think I will go with neural foraminal as it seems to make sense...when this doctor often does not. Have fun!

Apologies, Damren, I forgot to mention that I also use "neural foraminal" as steen described. "Foraminal" can be documented in the references I mentioned above.

Sorry I didn't finish my answer. Will think more carefully next time before I click the Submit button.

One of my guys always dictates it as "neuroforamina". I always put neural foraminal also as I checked my Stedman's Ortho Word Book and the MRI report. Maybe we need to get them some word books.

I always defer to a medical dictionary on these types of issues. Neuroforaminal is not in the one I use, Dorland's. Google just brings you to sites all over the place--not necessarily those that are references for MT work.
