Okay, I can't be the only one who types so much that almost all the letters have rubbed off my keyboard! Even though I rarely look down at them, it drives me crazy. I have tried using a Sharpie and putting them back on, only lasts a day or two. Does anyone else know of a way to solve this problem, other than buying a new keyboard every few months? Trivial problem I know, but hey, it is Saturday.

LOL! I thought I was going crazy. I have lost the M, N and part of the left shift key on a keyboard that is only a month old. I am a student at M-TEC, not an MT yet. I figure as long as I do not wear the little nobs of f of the F and J, I will know where home row is. The syllabus says not to look at the keys, and I guess it will help me not look if the letters aren't there. Kimberly

I had to laugh at this one. Not only do I rub off the letters but I always put a hole in the letter E! The left side is always worse than the right for me. The last time, I got a free keyboard because I got the extra warranty, which I never buy but did this time, and, since I wore through in about three months, I got a new one. The extra warranty was minimal in cost. I can't remember exactly what it was off the top of my head, but it may be worth looking into for yourself next time.

Isn't it crazy what this does to you? Even though you don't need them, it's like watching your feet and trying to walk! I've tried putting a coat of epoxy over mine--no good. Will be interesting to see if someone has a solution.

I thought it was me, or the keyboard! My A, E, and N are rounded off and the L is blank, with little slits where I must pound it with my fingernail. I even bought another keyboard but didn't like it and went back to the old one. I have worn off more letters than I care to count, company replaced one keyboard but had the same result, so I gave up. Seems like it is a problem everywhere. If there is a solution, I would like to know what it is. I guess we all just work too hard! Rosa Lea

Thanks for the solution above. I may try that. I was beginning to think it was just me, but obviously it is not. The good thing is that no one else in my house will even try to use my computer since it has very few letters on it and they don't know where the rest are! Thanks a lot.

Yes! I have a Logitech cordless. It's black and ergonomic with a detachable wrist rest. I've had it for a little over 6 months. My a, s, d, t, n, e, a, and some other keys are getting smooth, but the letters are still there, just like brand new! It was a little pricey than others, I also got the wireless optical mouse with it, but it's worth it, for as much as I had to replace the Microsoft ergonomic keyboard. I couldn't tell ya about fingernails wearing through, as I have a bad nail biting habit. Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse

Letters wearing off AND holes in the keys. I just broke a Logitech cordless keyboard that I've had long enough to wear off some of the letters and there was a hole (a big one) in the space bar. quote: I can't tell you how many perfectly good keyboards I had to stop using for that very reason! With me, the "I" and "O" go first ... guess I have a heavy touch with my right hand.
Elizabeth, that's hilarious. I haven't looked at the keyboard while typing for about 30 years or so -- it doesn't matter if the letter is still there. The hole did bother me, though -- I kept catching it on my thumb. [ 02-08-2003: Message edited by: Julie W8 ]

I have not had the letter wearing off problem since I started using keyboard "skins." I bought the mailer at Office Depot and specified the make and model of my keyboard and got the custom skin in the mail. These serve double duty for me -- with pets in the office area, lots of ambient dust (especially in the summer) and my prediliction for being sloppy with coffee and sodas, they keep the keyboard clean and free of debris. In the 6 years since I have been using these skins I have not yet had any letters wear off. The current keyboard has been in use for nearly 2 full years without any problems. When the skin gets dirty, you can just wash it on the keyboard or take it off and wash it. They come with adhesive strips for a snug fit. They are super thin and you hardly know they are there after you get used to the feel. Not expensive, either ... I think it was around $13 and it included the shipping. Nancy

The Microsoft ergonomic keyboard does it, too. They replaced mine (free, sent by Purolator)when I wrote to them. Now the new one they sent is doing the same thing. j,k,l,n,m are almost completely gone. r,e,s,d, and c are fading. I can't type when I look at the keys, so it doesn't really affect my typing, but it's a mystery to me why it happens. Chemical reaction perhaps? My DIL has the same keyboard, and it's as pristine as the day she got it.

Skin Mailer OK, I figured it out. This one is more expensive than the one StatOR bought so check out Office Depot. You buy the mailer and send it in and American Covers fills the order for the distributor, then sends you the keyboard cover (which you paid for when you bought the mailer). Interesting way of handling it, but it works. [ 02-09-2003: Message edited by: Julie W8 ]

Hi all: I seem to have solved this keyboard problem of disappearing or mutilated letters on some keys. I, too use a Sharpie pen, but then I used a thin coat of colorless nailpolish. This holds up very well.

I think it is something about whether the letters or just painted on or "laSered" in or whatever. I'm still using my Packard Bell keyboard I got in like 1982. Q and Z are the only original letters still on there. I don't want to give it up because it has the perfect touch for me, so I generally do the black marker coated with nail polish. It does wear off, so I just reapply it. The keys don't look great, but I can tell what the letter is if I have a blank-out moment, and it's a lot cheaper than replacing the keyboard, especially since I have so much trouble finding one with a touch "soft" enough.
