CALL-IN DICTATION

PLEASE HELP ME! I just received a phone call that has my head spinning. I'm a self-employed MT, self-taught, computer illiterate (except for getting around in my word processor). I go around to my offices and pick up micro-cassettes to transcribe and deliver hard copy transcribed notes. The call I just received was from my biggest client's office manager. The doc keeps losing her tapes and gets all freaked out about having to re-do the dictation. Her partner has a call-in service in which the transcribed notes are faxed back to the office. (For some reason they do not like e-mail.) My doc wants to go with the call-in service also so that she won't have to keep up with tapes. The office manager said they were very happy with my work and to call back if I ever get equipped to receive call-in dictation. My problem is that I have no idea of how to get set up that way. I did make tentative calls to Lanier and was told for $10,000 I could get set up. As this client only generates $600 to $800 monthly, this would not be an option. Can anyone help? Please keep in mind that when I hear "computer-speak" it might as well be Greek

I have been looking into Start Stop as an alternative for my business. It can be set up as a call-in system, but I am not sure exactly how that part of it works. But there is a hand-held thing that can email the voice files to you. It only holds a little over an hour of dictation, but it sounds like that would be enough for you. The Start Stop pedal is only $199 and plugs into the serial port. The hand-held dictation thingymajig is $179. You can find them by doing an engine search for wav foot pedals.

I posted a digital dictation "catch-all" post a few months ago. Here's a link to the thread. http://www.mtchat.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=39&t=000024 Hope it helps. Mike DeTuri P.S.--If you or anyone else find any additional info in your searches that you can add to the thread, please do.

I am also very new at this and just started doing some research on it myself. I went to www.martelelectronics.com and did some research on Digital Dictation and looked into the ME95 ($598.00). I then called their 1-800 number and spoke to "Jason", who was very helpful. I explained to him that I was very new at this computer "stuff" and he walked me through it and how it works. Hopefully it will help you

Hi Laura and welcome - I see you are a new member. Thanks for your post. When I did a search for the digital recording as suggested, I came across that very web site and am awaiting a call back from Jason. It sounds like exactly what I need, since the other needs the use of a digital hand-held recorder which the doc can't seem to hang on to. (I've considered attachin it to her with a chain.) I just hope this doc will go for it. The reason they won't use e-mail, it turns out, is that they can't figure out how to access it. Thanks for all of the help everyone. Thank you, girlimberlost, for using non-tech-head words - I love thingamijiggy!

I also looked into the Martel Electronics digital system. Be aware that the doctor WILL NOT be able to stop, rewind or re-listen to their dictation like a tape recorder. All they do is call your system, dictate and hang up. You need to ask your doctor if that is important to them.

I was researching this also and was looking into the DVI system (need that back up, forward, pause feature!). Unfortunately, their smallest system is four ports/400 hours of dictation - all for the low, low cost of $7,000!! Actually, in calling around, that's not a bad price for the features I need (the four ports/400 hours was great for me!) Still VERY costly.

ANGE-MT, Please let us know what you decide to go with. Many of us might be in this position at any moment! All of these posts are very helpful. You always have to think of the doctor, I didn't know that with Martel's system you couldn't rewind and listen. The more a system is like their old way of dictating, better.

Thanks all - I'm in the process of researching a number of different call-in systems. I'm not so sure about the Martel anymore. Even though it's the least expensive, it's true that it doesn't have rewind, stop, play, etc., and I'm sure my doc wouldn't go for that. There's another possibility that I'm considering. I found a company called Bytescribe that has a system that sounds really good for me. The cost is around $2,795.00, I believe. This buys a computer which your docs can call in to and leave dictation. The transcriptionist needs a wav pedal or something similar (they have their own brand for $149.00)in order to access the dictation. Thanks everyone for your help!

I was going to suggest Bytescribe. With their system, you can start off relatively small and increase size/capacity as needed. Check into their trade-in options when it is time to upgrade. We have been very pleased. Tech support has been very reliable! straws

I just talked to Martel Electronics. They said they do sell a gadget that hooks the doc's tape recorder to the phone system. All the doctor has to do is dictate on their hand held tape/digital recorder, hook it to the phone, dial your call-in system and push play. This way the doctor is able to edit their dictation before sending it to the transcriptionist. The cost of the gadget is $55.00. I might be interested in this myself. It's cheaper than the other call-in systems.
