Anonymous Unregistered

My son builds computers and has agreed to build one for me that I want to put voice recognition on.

What do I need if I will have Word for Windows 6.0? Someone here once told me I will need "a lot of ram" but how much is that? I need specific numbers.

I am interested in doing a small account at home on the side from my regular job...this is something I have the time to invest in and I can take my time.

Can anyone tell me what I need or tell me of any sites to go to to buy online?

Any information will be greatly appreciated!

Hi,
I use IBM ViaVoice Millennium Edition...I do not remember the computer specs, but they should be listed at www.ibm.com. Also, you might want to search the Voice Recognition Forum and Archives here at MT Desk for some additional info.

Everything I've ever seen says get as much RAM as you possibly can. Nowadays that's up in the 768 to 1500 megabyte range. That's probably overkill, even for speech recognition. 256 megs or 512 megs should be fine.

The other thing is to get the fastest processor you can find. Either a Pentium 4 or an AMD Athlon.

A fast hard drive with a high data transfer rate won't hurt either. Get one that's 7200 RPM with Ultra DMA/ATA 100.

What else? You need a fast front-side bus to keep the processor accessing data in RAM as quickly as possible. Most motherboards come with a 266 mHz bus so that should be fine.

As was previously mentioned, you'll also want to check with the manufacturer of whatever software you get to make sure you have at least their recommended requirements.

Yes, you will want 512 of RAM, with room for more, and the fastest processor and front side bus you can get. Speech recognition keeps increasing its demands with each new software generation, and still doesn't have all the power it would like to improve recognition.

However, you should also give careful consideration to the sound card and headset you use - that can make more difference than processor speed and RAM to your results. I would tune in to one of the speech lists/newsgroups for advice on what the best performing sound cards are at the moment. Alternatively, go with a good USB headset, or USB adapter for a standard headset, with a sound card built in. In many ways this is the preferable solution, since it means your speech training files can be moved, along with the headset/soundcard, from computer to computer without retraining, and it will work well on a laptop, as well as a desktop computer. If you also have a sound card in the computer, you can use that for uploading/playback, and the USB sound card for recording and listening to your redictation simultaneously. Either send the playback to external speakers, or use two one ear headsets. (Just make sure your left ear does know what your right ear is doing )
