#6602 - 11/23/01 03:31 PM switch boxes??
Anonymous Unregistered

I have a problem -- too many computers and not enough space. I have seen "switch boxes" where you can hook up more than one PC to one monitor, keyboard and mouse.

My local Best Buy and Radio Shack were no help. I called the Radio Shack 1-800# and was told they have one for $149 which would have to be special ordered. I'm finding that hard to believe. I really don't think what I want is that uncommon or expensive.

I have looked online and I find all kinds of stuff -- most of which I can't tell if that's what I need or not.

Can anyone tell me specifically what I need/want is called and maybe where I can find it? I would be eternally grateful!

I first started with a manual switchbox which I had to turn a knob to A or B, depending on the computer I wanted to use. It worked great, but I could only share a monitor between two computers and still had to use separate keyboards and mouse. My computer guru then purchased and installed an electronic one which had all the ports needed to share monitor, keyboard and mouse between two computers. I only need to hit my Control button twice to switch between the two computers.

It has been working just great and I love the extra space. It's called MiniView KVM switch by Harding and it did cost $125 or so. The manual switch box was much cheaper ($50, I think). I would imagine you could find a manual switch box with the extra ports for sharing the keyboard and mouse, but I had a hard time locating one - hence the electronic version.

I believe my computer guy had to "network" my two computers in order for me to easily transfer work between the two computers but I don't think it would be necessary if you just wanted to run two computers separately but with sharing the keyboard/mouse.

If you can't find anything on the Net, try a local computer company and they can purchase it for you. Maybe with the above info, you'll find what you're looking for!

Good luck!

Thank you so much for the information. It was enough to help me narrow my online search and find what I was looking for. Turns out they are plentiful (as I suspected!).

I'm still looking around before I make up my mind, but I found one on eBay that will allow me have up to 4 computers connected to my keyboard, monitor and mouse (cables included) for under $40. The picture is almost identical to what I have seen used in offices before.

Thanks again!

I just wanted to post a quick follow up. I found and ordered a 4 port KVM switch off eBay for $35 plus $10 shipping (all necessary cords included). This was new equipment that came with manufacturer's warranty (one year I believe). I am reasonably sure anyone else needing this item would be able to get approximately the same deal.

I just love this! I have three computers hooked up and room for one more!

I am in the same situation. I have three machines total but need another one for work since upgrading my OS. My work program runs but it drags the entire system down with it. I'm looking at a barebones system (1ghz) and just adding my spare parts to it.

I have already ordered the DLink KVM switch that will connect two pc's with one monitor, keyboard, and mouse. It is an electronic switch over and found it for $39 plus had to buy cables which were in a kit for something like $7. Now I just have to order the second machine. Dreading that part but... I really do need another one and it will be my Christmas present to myself. The barebones has a processor twice faster than my current.
