I live in a remote area of Whidbey Island, Washington. Presently, high speed internet is not available (DSL or cable)in my particular neighborhood. However, I'm told satellite internet access is available.

I've heard conflicting comments about satellite dish internet connection, particularly for handling voice files. Please....anyone who has had experience (good or bad) with satellite internet connection, give me some feedback?

I've heard the reliability of transmitting voice files with a satellite dish connection depends upone the local weather. ???

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer on this.

We lived in the high country, above 8,000 ft about 20 miles from the nearest road. Since dsl was unavailable, I looked into satellite and the local company told me they did not recommend it, would not be responsible for the quality of sound files, nor would they offer any technical support. That cooled my jets!

I also live in the "boonies." I looked into satellite and our IT people did not recommend it. We have it for TV and lately have been having a lot of "stuttering" going on, so I am glad I listened to them.
I ended up using two modems. I had an internal one installed but you could go with an external one also. It was really very cheap ( less than $20 on sale) and the whole thing works great. I do have to have to have an extra phone line, but it is still cheaper than satellite or cable, even if I had the choice of cable. For some reason, it not only doubles my previous speed, it sometimes almost quadruples it. Amazing.

Thanks sooooooo much for the feedback!
Dither: So, with your 2 modems, are you receiving/transmitting voice files??? or just transmitting a finished transcribed document to an IVP or VPN. I just want to clarify, 'cuz my whole "decision" here depends on the ability to receive/transmit voice files.
Thanks again for your help!

Yup, voice files, all day long again and again and again and again I have never worked on any other digital system, so I don't know how the quality compares with DSL or cable or satellite but it seems to be OK. I just still really miss being able to "tweak" the tape to make it sound better.

I can't thank you enough! Wow! Knowing I can send/receive voice files over modem(s) instead of having to (impatiently) wait for cable or DSL availability (if ever)is truly great!!
Up to a few years ago I was an IC working at home. I'm presently the MT supervisor at our clinic and have found myself wanting to somehow work from home once again. My hope was to offer our clinic the option of going digital, still be able to use the same 6 ICs we use now, keeping them employed as well as making it all cost effective for the clinic. The only glitch in my idea is that I simply don't have high speed internet access at home to handle the volumes of voice files our clinic would be producing.
Now I know where to proceed.
Thanks again!!

Nana -

I have an employee in Mount Vernon using satellite to receive voice files and transmit documents. I'd be happy to tell you all the details, but it's too much to type! If you'd like to give me your e-mail address, I'll send you my phone number and you can call me.

Dither,

I am thinking about trying to use two modems as I live way out in the sticks and can't afford satellite, and I really need faster internet if I'm going to work from home.

Is there any advice or how-tos you can give me before I invest in the second phone line and change internet providers? What internet provider do you have that allows you to dial up on two phone lines?

If you'd rather email me, that's fine.I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks,
Jamie

Diane,

I would like to know more about the satellite as well! I live out in the sticks and the two local internet providers say that I am too much in a valley to get a signal from their towers, so the only route for me to take around here they tell me is satellite service. I would prefer something much cheaper, but would like to know the pros and cons of using one for voice messages. I have the opportunity to gain a job, but need high speed connection to send and receive files from/to a VPN. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My email is triplel@netins.net. Thanks!!

Dither,
I too am interested in the two modem route. Could you also give me the ins and outs. Do you just call your dial-up service and ask for two lines (assuming you have already installed the second jack through the phone company)? Could you also tell me what internet provider you use? My e-mail address is creiter@rochester.rr.com I will be moving soon to a very remote area of Ohio/West Virginia and will not have high speed internet (boy, am I going to miss it!)
Thank you for your time.

Hi guys - sorry it took me so long to see your messages. I don't get here very often lately.
Anyway, about the double modems, it really is very simple. I had an extra line installed from the phone company, so of course there were installation charges but just think tax deductible. I called my ISP to ask about the double modems and they said they really didn't care about how many modems I hook up - so there is no difference in the charge there. I must say, that was a pleasant surprise. Don't know if all providers are that lenient though. I bought an internal modem because I didn't want all the extra clutter. I think it was only about $15 at Office Max and was simple to install, not by me, of course but one of the IT people came out from the medical center. My husband watched and said he could have done it by himself, so don't be afraid of that part.
As far as my internet provider, we have just a little local company called Spacestar. We are not close enough to any big cities to get anything like AOl or the like.
Just read this over and I am not sure I made sense. Essentially all you have to do is put the extra modem in, get the extra phone line in and that is it. When I dial up, first one modem dials and then the other and they stack up and give me usually at least triple of what I used to get.
Hope this is of some help to you. I have found it works great for me. Let me know if I can give you any more info on it. Good luck !

Dither,

Thanks so much for that information! The Wal-Mart in town has internal modems for about $30, so I think I'll go grab one.

Between my computer and my mother's, I have installed two cd drives, a hard drive, two power supplies, and a motherboard, so hopefully I can handle putting this thing in. I don't have tech support, so I'm on my own.

I looked around on the internet and found that there are providers that offer what they call multilink service, where they will let you use two phone numbers at the same time, for a few dollars more than the regular service. It probably won't be local, but I have Excel phone service, and all my long distance is included, so that shouldn't be a problem. I bookmarked it on my work computer, but I forgot to bring it home with me. Even with the extra charge it still costs about the same as MSN, and you can pay by the month or for a whole year if you want, and there is no contract.

Thanks,
Jamie
