Good unless you are looking for flexibility.

An IC job that is not flexible? That doesn't sound right... Care to expand?

I worked there several years ago so things have may changed since then. My experience was that you had to give them a start time and you had 10 or 12 hours from that point to get your work done. They also used to dock pay on a report if there were errors in that report.

My suggestion is to carefully read your contract and then decide. If you send in a report with a misspelled word, you do not get paid for the lines in that report. You are supposed to be an IC, but are required to type at least 60 minutes a day. You also have deadlines of when the work is due back based on when the work was downloaded from the client and if you do not have it back before the deadline, you have to ask for an extension of time, which is not always given, or a deduction of 50% of the total lines is done. Only after I quit was I told by the owner, the following which is copied directly from her e-mail to me: "As I read through your email, it struck me that there may have been some confusion as to your role as a contractor and owner of your own transcription service company as it relates to RI. As a contractor, you make the rules with regard to the work you complete and don't complete. Even if work is loaded to you, you and you alone decide whether your service can complete and return that work. There are times when RI is overloaded and the work may stay assigned to your box but if you have communicated to the QAC that your service is unable to complete the work then your obligations have been fulfilled and we would then expect you to complete the work the next time your service is available. Does that make sense? It is relatively common for especially folks new to IC work to get confused and think that if the work is in their box then they absolutely must complete as they would if they were employees. That is not the case at RI."

Not sure why this thread was brought up - original post was from September. What's that - almost a year ago?

I'm the recruiter for RI.

Flexibility is there - there is no 10 or 12 hour window - but ICs are expected to get work in by the due times and there is a certain amount that they're contracted to do.

Any questions - people can feel free to e-mail me.

Kelly - I don't believe you ever did work for RI. Correct? Please correct me if I'm wrong - but I don't see that you ever did. So, not sure you're really the authority figure to speak on this issue.

RI's docking policy is pretty straightforward.

Run your spellchecker. If we pick up errors that are picked up on spellchecker that a contractor has missed, they're docked. Run the spellchecker and that won't happen. If you can verify alternative spelling of something that has been docked, docks are removed.

You contract to get the work in on time. We give tons of room for situations, special circumstances, etc., but our contractors are expected to meet their contractual obligations.

Again, if anyone has questions about our policy who would be interested in coming to work as an IC for RI, don't hesitate to e-mail me.

I did work for RI and never had a problem being docked for anything. I met my TAT unless something major happened and then I asked for and recieved an extension. Once you know your limits of how many lines you can do you shouldnt have a problem. Ive never known them to just pile the work on and expect it all within a set time frame...even when there was extra work you had the time to get it done. Everyone can figure roughly how many minutes of dictation they want a day. When I left RI I was doing more than 60 minutes a day and had no problems with meeting my TAT. I assume they still try to set you with certain doctors so you can build your expanders accordingly. I never had a problem while working there.

I also worked for RI. Lord love a duck, they put up with so much from me, as I was brand spanking new and the school I went to was not such a hot one....so, I was a real mess. They were great to me. I have to say though, I never missed my TAT even if it meant staying up all night to get it done. I did that many times. Never, not once was I docked a single red cent. I'm not arguing with anyone about their doing so, just saying it did not happen to me. I really think that unless you are just plain sloppy over and over and over again and they feel it's maybe a way to get you on the stick that they don't do that.

I had to leave because of my husband's terminal illness. Since then, with some experience under my belt, I have gone on to another company that pays better and I'm very happy there. That all being said, I have nothing but praise for RI.

Nope, great company with lots of really nice people. I would highly recommend them.

Marti

RIU gave me my first MT job. I will always be grateful to them for that. I worked for them for a year and then moved on when my account moved on. Decent people. Rebecca is really nice.

I have dial-up, but I can get an aircard or broadband... will that be accepted with RI?

Rochelle, to get on with the national companies you are pretty much going to have to have a high-speed connection, very few accept anything less, even fewer accept dial-up. Also, you probably wouldn't make decent money if you don't have high-speed, as all those voice files would take forever on dial-up or even aircard to download (assuming by aircard you mean Satellite). Very few companies accept satellite either, usually because it is not reliable.

Not having more than 2 years experience seems to be keeping me from being hired "employee status"
I have been told Aircard is accepted \:\)

Aircard is wonderful. I always have signal in my area with Verizon, which is the Aircard. My son has brought his laptop over and we have a blast viewing Youtube. My dial-up takes too long for youtube.

Rochelle,

Did the employers actually tell you that? If they didn't actually come out and say it, I suspect that's not the reason. I don't know what the reason is, but I haven't heard that lack of two years experience has kept any of our graduates from being hired as employees.

Check with your school. They can give you names of companies that will at least test you and hopefully hire you as an employee if that's your goal. Keep trying at any rate, because I don't think the lack of 2 years experience is an issue if you test well enough.

Linda,
It may be that Rochelle is seeing the ads, which truthfully say 2 or more years, if they don't say 5 or more years and in my case the difficulty is "recent" experience as I have 10 years old experience.

Your school seems to be well liked in the field and I suspect your grads may well get this waived for them. It is out there though and a little frustrating.

Pam

I was referring to the post above. There are companies that accept broadband or aircard, but it is my lack of experience that they say "no" to.

I am currently empployed part-time, but am wanting full-time.
